Fighting Poverty with Art
Lola Apolinario is a plastic artist and she is teaching how to make cute things from waste materials. The students are single mothers from poor zones of Lima. The mothers are learning how to do art from waste and at same time they are building productive chains and markets for their products.

"Create the Future" Design Contest 2011
You are invited to enter the 2011 "Create the Future" Design Contest, sponsored by COMSOL, Creo - a PTC product, and Tech Briefs Media Group. The ninth annual contest will recognize outstanding innovations in product design, awarding a Grand Prize of $20,000 USD.
New this year is an Electronics Design category sponsored by Digi-Key Corp. Additional entry categories include Consumer Products; Machinery & Equipment; Medical; Safety and Security; Sustainable Technologies; and Transportation. Entries can be submitted by individuals and/or teams in up to seven categories.
The top entry in each category will receive a workstation computer from Hewlett-Packard. The top ten most popular entries, as voted on by site registrants, will get a 3D mouse from 3Dconnexion. All qualified entrants will be included in a drawing for NASA Tech Briefs T-shirts, and the winning entries will be featured in a special supplement to NASA Tech Briefs magazine. All entries must be received by June 30, 2011. There is no cost to enter.

Here some of my favorities projects:
The combined turbine is in 3 times more effective than the already existing. This effect is reached by that, between vertical blades of the turbine horizontal propellers are located (free or rigidly), which force air into the space between blades. Between these propellers in the center of the turbine is located a turbodetander.
We use a pen drive to transfer data from one system to other system. My idea is if the data is in one USB and if we want to transfer it to another USB there is no need to transfer it to your personal computer. Instead the USB drive has an option of a slot on its other end to insert another pen drive to it. The pen drive which is charged through computer detects any USB connected to it. it reads the data and transfers the data to the USB by operating of the switch on button.
The Trekr Loop Handle© is a new handle design for mankind’s oldest and simplest machines: hammers, hatchets, pickaxes, etc. The loop design offers several advantages over the traditional handles. The loop end makes losing grip on the handle almost impossible; it would offer an ideal handhold if used on rock-climbing pickaxes.
This is an adjustable geometry prone recumbent bicycle. The bike is displayed in its "down" position. At low speeds it is "upright", allowing balance by aligning the riders hips over the pedals and the hands over the front wheel. At speeds over 30 mph, the bike will lower down by use of pneumatic gas springs and allow the rider to maintain a more streamlined position for reduced wind resistance.

Greenerator - The Green Residential Generator
Some lucky people live in private homes, which gives them the option to install solar panels and wind turbines in their gardens and rooftops. But what about the majority of the people on the planet that reside in apartment buildings and don’t own their own roof or backyard? The Greenerator gives a clever solution to that problem.

Grassroot Innovation in Peru
Currently changes happen quite fast and a new innovation appears almost every day for example "D.light Design" with his LED solar lamp oriented to poor families in developing countries and "Embrace" with the design of a low-cost infant warmer for the base of the pyramid. All the above-mentioned innovations have been created in the developed world but there are many examples of innovations created in the developing world. However they are not world-known and invisible for international media. Maybe the most known case is: William Kamkwamba. A grassroot inventor from Africa, he built a windmill to power electrical appliances in his house from materials collected in a local scrapyard. His case is not the only one. There are many William's in the developing world.
In this article, I will share with you, the case of grassroot innovators from Peru. The barriers and problems that they face are world-wide spread and specifically often in developing countries. But problems have also solutions and thank to a network of international NGOs, which are supporting these initiatives, positive changes are happening. I would like to mention the story of the Yachachiqs (Yachachiq is the quechua name for people who pass on knowledge). It is based on the fusion of native knowledge and modern knowledge in order to develop appropriate technologies. Finally, I would like to propose some alternatives to motivate the creation of self- sustainable communities and ecosystems for grassroot innovation in developing countries.

Point of use household water treatment system
Point of use household water treatment system: The system is a practical and effective solution for providing sustained access to safe water in Peru. The system use biosand filters, chlorination and safe storage which are identified as the most effective according to our research and having the greatest potential to become widely used in Peru. The goal of our system is to empower people without access to clean water to improve water quality by treating it and storing it in the home. The key features of our system are as follows:
- Produce sufficient quantities of clean water to meet daily needs
- Effective for treating different water sources and quality levels
- Low cost, accessible and affordable replacement units and parts
Lack of access to safe water contributes significantly to disease and death resulting from infectious diarrhea and other debilitating illnesses. When poor families cannot afford adequate access to safe water, they buying water from cheaper sources that may have higher levels of contamination, or they may use less water, which could reduce their defenses against diseases. Household water technologies offer valuable treatment of drinking water. Priority could be placed on areas with the most highly contaminated water or those that collect water directly from surface waters without any treatment. Could be placed in schools and hospitals for a wide-spread effect on some of the most vulnerable populations.

International Development Design Summit
The 2010 International Development Design Summit (IDDS) will take place from 7-30 July at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO, USA. IDDS 2010 will be somewhat different from previous years - whereas past summits focused on creating prototypes, this summit will focus on turning these prototypes into products and getting them into the hands of people who can use them. It is the goal of IDDS 2010 to guide project teams through the process of becoming viable ventures with business plans to disseminate their innovations at scale. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the many challenges of entrepreneurship and technology dissemination for developing markets with a diverse group of people from around the globe.
