Fighting Poverty with Art

Lola Apolinario is a plastic artist and she is teaching how to make cute things from waste materials. The students are single mothers from poor zones of Lima. The mothers are learning how to do art from waste and at same time they are building productive chains and markets for their products.

The Morality of Profit

The SEVEN Fund is sponsoring a global competition inviting discourse on the morality of profit. SEVEN welcomes the submission of essays that explore the morality of profit through the lens of diverse cultural, religious, philosophical, and academic traditions. We will award top honors to three essays, a grand prize of $20,000, second prize of $10,000, and third prize of $5,000. The best pieces will be collected into a manuscript, which is intended for publication, and the program will culminate with an international conference in 2010.

BBC World News will be launching an 8-part series on social entrepreneurs around the globe. Alvin’s Guide to Good Business will follow financial expert Alvin Hall as he visits a different social entrepreneur each week. He’ll look at business models, impact, and the challenges of scaling. Featured organizations include Riders for Health, IDE-India, Marine Stewardship Council, Apopo, Partners in Health, Friends International, Camfed and Kiva. The Skoll Foundation partnered with RockhopperTV on the series.

Nokia’s Growth Economy Venture Challenge

Nokia is seeking an idea that is worth a $1 million (USD) investment. At CES last week in Las Vegas, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo announced the Growth Economy Venture Challenge to encourage innovators and entrepreneurs to create a mobile product or service that raises the standard of living or enhances the lives of those in growth economies worldwide. Ten finalists will be invited to present their ideas and business models to a panel of Nokia business people and private venture capitalists. The innovators may receive business guidance and possibly other funding from participating venture capitalists. Submissions for the Growth Economy Venture Challenge are being accepted now, and the deadline for all submissions is 18 April. The winning organization will be announced in June and will receive a $1 million Nokia investment.

The Forum of Young Global Leaders is a sister organization of the World Economic Forum. It is a unique, multistakeholder community of the world’s most extraordinary leaders under 40, which creates a diverse, multinational, multistakeholder network of the top young leaders in the world; enhances knowledge and leadership skills; and serves as a platform to work collaboratively on key issues facing the world.

The Global Photography Campaign “Humanizing Development“ aims to promote and showcase examples of people winning the battle against poverty, social exclusion and marginalization.

The photos should fit in one of the campaign’s 14 thematic areas related to the Millennium Development Goals, such as fighting deprivation and expanding access to food, water, sanitation, education and health services for the poor and promoting women’s leadership and equal opportunity to develop talents.

The Touch of Genius Prize for Innovation was developed to inspire an innovator to continue the promotion of braille literacy for blind and deafblind people worldwide. The Touch of Genius Prize for Innovation ($20,000) will be granted for a new educational method, a new tactile literacy product, or a new technological advance in tactile literacy.
