Open Source Translation - The Manual
Open source translation tools will allow translators to share work with collaborators around the world. This manual was designed and written by a community of Open Translation innovators using the FLOSSManuals platform to collaboratively author the content.
The field of translation is in a state of transition, and software tools to support language translation are evolving with corresponding rapidity. Open Translation describes a nascent field of practice emerging at the crossroads of three dynamic movements: Open Content, The Free/Libre/Open Source Software and Open production. It is the set of practices and work processes for translating and maintaining open content using FLOSS tools, and leveraging the open nature of the internet to make that content and those tools and processes available to the largest number of contributors and consumers. It promises to profoundly broaden access to knowledge across language barriers.

Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia, has often been criticized as having misinformation and inadequate references. By allowing any user to edit, it runs the risk of having “truth” defined by majority vote or a persistent vocal minority; it has the potential to deliver the public’s perception of science into the hands of fringe groups with an ax to grind.

Science Commons announces the Protocol for Implementing Open Access Data. The Protocol is a method for ensuring that scientific databases can be legally integrated with one another. The Protocol is built on the public domain status of data in many countries and provides legal certainty to both data deposit and data use. The protocol is not a license or legal tool in itself, but instead a methodology for a) creating such legal tools and b) marking data already in the public domain for machine-assisted discovery.

The Wage Guide - Fair Trade Calculator
The Wage Guide is an artisan wage calculation tool that guides decisions about how to calculate “a fair wage in a local context.” At the click of a button, the Wage Guide converts ‘artisan per piece payment’ to a ‘daily wage’ and then compares the daily wage to international economic indicators providing advice on how to increase wages to meet these standards.
The Wage Guide helps to ensure that artisans are fairly compensated in the fair trade craft market. Many buyers and artisans in the current fair trade market are looking for guidance on how to pay fair wages. As fair trade gains popularity and more organizations want to be involved, it is essential that we create a standardized methodology around fair wages to protect the good work of people who have been building the fair trade movement over the last 50 years.
